Crafting Culinary Calligraphy: Homemade Edible Ink Solutions

This month, our Simply Lettered Box contained the most delicious macaroons with edible inks and markers to create a truly one of a kind treat! This was by far one of our most popular boxes- I mean who doesn't love sweets personalized for Valentine's Day!?

But what if you find yourself in need of edible ink for your calligraphy and your supplies are running low? Fear not! With a few simple ingredients, you can create your own edible ink at home. In this post, we'll explore how to craft homemade edible ink for your culinary calligraphy needs.

DIY Edible Ink Recipes: When traditional edible ink supplies are scarce, you can rely on alternative ingredients to create your own culinary calligraphy solutions. Here are two simple recipes:

  1. Lemon Juice and Gel Food Coloring:

    • Ingredients:
      • 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice
      • Gel Food Coloring (desired colors)
    • Instructions:
      • In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice with a small amount of gel food coloring until you achieve the desired hue.
      • Adjust the color intensity by adding more or less food coloring as needed.
      • Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure even distribution of color.
      • Your homemade edible ink is now ready to use for calligraphy!
  2. Vodka and Food Coloring:

    • Ingredients:
      • 1/2 tablespoon Vodka
      • Gel or Liquid Food Coloring (desired colors)
    • Instructions:
      • In a clean container, combine 1/2 tablespoon of vodka with a small amount of gel or liquid food coloring.
      • Stir the mixture gently until the color is evenly distributed and the consistency is suitable for writing.
      • Adjust the color intensity by adding more food coloring if needed.
      • Your homemade edible ink is now ready to bring your culinary calligraphy creations to life!

Safety and Usage Tips: When working with homemade edible ink, it's essential to keep the following tips in mind to ensure safety and optimal results:

  • Use clean, food-safe containers and utensils to prepare and store the ink.
  • Test the consistency and color intensity of the ink before using it on your culinary creations.
  • Store any leftover ink in airtight containers in the refrigerator for future use.
  • Use new calligraphy brushes or pens designated for food use to prevent cross-contamination.
